Strong Fairness and Full Abstraction for Communicating Processes

چکیده

We construct several denotational semantics for communicating processes that incorporate assumptions of strong (process) fairness. Strong fairness is the guarantee that every process enabled infinitely often will make progress infinitely often. Modeling fairness compositionally requires care: generally speaking, the fair computations of a command cannot be defined only in terms of the fair computations of its component commands. For this reason, we introduce the notion of parameterized fairness, which generalizes fairness sufficiently to admit a compositional characterization. In each of these semantics, a command's meaning is simply the set of fair traces representing its fair computations; each fair trace records the steps made along a computation as well as additional information made explicit by the definition of parameterized fairness. Each semantics obtains full abstraction with respect to a natural notion of strongly fair program behavior: two terms are given identical meanings precisely when they exhibit the same behaviors in all program contexts. ] 2000 Academic

Traces, Pomsets, Fairness and Full Abstraction for Communicating Processes

We provide a denotational trace semantics for processes with synchronous communication and a form of weakly fair parallelism. The semantics is fully abstract: processes have the same trace sets if and only if their communication behaviors are identical in all contexts. The model can easily be adapted for asynchronously communicating processes, or for shared-memory parallel programs. We also pro...

Deconstructing CCS and CSP Asynchronous Communication, Fairness, and Full Abstraction

The process algebras CCS and CSP assume that processes interact by means of handshake communication, although it would have been equally reasonable to have adopted asynchronous communication as primitive. Traditional semantics of CCS (based on bisimulation) and CSP (such as the failures model) do not assume fair parallel composition, although fairness is often vital in ensuring liveness propert...

Process Algebra with Iteration

We introduce iteration in process algebra by means of (the binary version of) Kleene's star operator: x y is the process that chooses between x and y, and upon termination of x has this choice again. It is proved that adding respectively interleaving, communication and abstraction operators increases expressivity up to the regular processes. However, if the distinction between (successful) term...

Fair Testing

Abs t rac t . We investigate the notion of fair testing, a formal testing theory in the style of De Nicola and Hennessy, where divergences are disregarded as long as there axe visible outgoing transitions. The usual testing theories, such as the standard model of failure pre-order, do not allow such fair interpretations because of the way in which they ensure their compositionality with respect...

Fair Model Checking with Process Counter Abstraction

Parameterized systems are characterized by the presence of a large (or even unbounded) number of behaviorally similar processes, and they often appear in distributed/concurrent systems. A common state space abstraction for checking parameterized systems involves not keeping track of process identifiers by grouping behaviorally similar processes. Such an abstraction, while useful, conflicts with...
